SEAN CAPONE

2022 · VIDEO INSTALLATION

Sean Capone (b. Rochester NY) is an animation artist, video projection muralist, motion-capture performer, writer, and curator based in Brooklyn, NY. Sean received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1994), and he is a 2020 NYSCA/NYFA Fellow in Digital/Electronic Art.

Over the past decade, Sean has become recognized for his digital moving-image works and public art activations, creating site-specific 'video murals' using animation, projection, and LED screens. Sean’s moving-image work employs a wide variety of animation practices, including (in the case of ExoBotanica) the creation of computer-generated simulations of floral and biomorphic forms which are inspired by botanical imagery, landscape painting, the history of architectural ornamentation, and the interplay of abstraction & pattern in experimental cinema and contemporary digital art.

Sean’s award-winning works have been commissioned for Penn State University, ZAZ10 Times Square (NYC), Supernova Digital Animation Festival (Denver, CO), the Brooklyn Museum (NYC), the Museum of Biblical Art (NYC), and the SCAD Museum of Art (Savannah, GA).

He has presented work in numerous solo & group shows, festivals and screenings, most recently including Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin DE), the National Gallery (Wash DC), Telematic Media Arts (SF, CA), and 5-50 Gallery (Queens, NY), and the Athens Digital Art Festival (Athens, GR).
